Nashville Based Operatic Artist
Javier Castro is a Honduran-American tenor currently pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance at Belmont University, where he studies with Dr. Mark Whatley. A passionate and versatile artist, he has performed on opera and musical theatre stages across the United States and abroad.
This past summer, Javier made his debut in Prague and Vienna with Prague Summer Nights, working under the direction of Joshua Major and Joachim Schamberger, and collaborating with the renowned pianist Justina Lee. He appeared as Don Curzio in Le Nozze di Figaro and covered the role of Basilio. Other operatic credits include Ferrando in Così fan tutte (Opera Lucca), Roméo in Roméo et Juliette (Belmont Opera Theatre), Pinocchio in Pinocchio (Belmont Opera Theatre), and Viscount Cascada in The Merry Widow (Belmont Opera Theatre). His musical theatre roles include Donkey in Shrek the Musical (Bearden Theatre).
Javier has studied and performed in Lucca, Italy, with Opera Lucca, working with esteemed faculty such as Peter Volpe, Raphael Fusco, and Alessandra Volpi. At Belmont Opera Theatre, under the direction of Dr. Savanna Sokolnicki and Dr. Kristi Whitten, he has participated in masterclasses and intensive collaborations with internationally acclaimed soprano Kathryn Lewek. He also appeared in the inaugural Nashville Bel Canto Foundation Gala as a member of the chorus, founded by Metropolitan Opera coach Stefano Baldasseroni.
In addition to opera, Javier has found success on concert and competition stages. He is a two-time National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) national finalist, placing in the top three in both Classical Voice and Musical Theatre. He is also an ICCA World Champion with The Pitchmen, Belmont’s internationally recognized all-male a cappella group, where he currently serves as president.
Beyond the stage, Javier is dedicated to leadership and community building through music. He has served as a Resident Assistant at Belmont, earning recognition as part of the university’s “Staff of the Year” in 2024, and works in the School of Music office as an assistant to the undergraduate and graduate program coordinators.
With a love for both the lyrical and the dramatic, Javier is eager to continue pursuing opportunities in opera, concert, and ensemble performance, sharing the transformative power of music with audiences worldwide.
